The Beaver Joins Growing List of Dongping Area Closures

The most recent casuality in the Dongping Lu vicinity is The Beaver. Sure, we know that Shanghai's F&B landscape is constantly changing, but this one still hits hard. We found comfort in the knowledge that standing on the Zapata's bar meant someone would pour tequila in our mouths and solace knowing the party at the continued at The Beaver when our friends tapped out for the night.

Originally opened as The Eager Beaver in September 2004, the bar was rechristened The Beaver by Aussie Kit Goodrick who took it over in January 2006. In April 2018, kebab experts Grill & Chill started operating a small second location on the premises.

And now, your time to watch the sun come up seated at the horseshoe-shaped bar with a curious parade of fun strangers is running out. As we hear it, the mellow little watering hole's last night is December 31 – just like Sasha's and Zapata's

This round of government-led commercial shutdowns includes already shuttered Di Shui Dong and Simply Thai, but you can still head over to the former's Maoming Lu or Xianxia Lu branches to satisfy your cumin spare rib cravings. Rest assured, the latter's numerous other locations are still doing fine.

Chef Ling Huang's Dong Ping Lu Pirata also closes at years-end, but it's businses as usual at Columbia Circle. This unfortunately means that Austin Hu's Madison Kitchen is ping-ponging for the third time. There's currently no word on a new location , but we hope to get good news soon. We doubt we can survive winter without their meatball sub, so riding the subway to Hongqiao might be the new normal.

Saving a bit of good new for last, Italian favorite D.O.C has already secured a new location at 390 Dagu Lu slated to open in mid-January. They promise a raucous New Year's Eve party to bid their original location adieu and if all goes to plan, you won't have to live without D.O.C. for more than two weeks.
